Supplement Stacking: How to Combine Supplements for Maximum Results
How I stack supplements at Inception Gym Christchurch: the evidence-based foundation, timing, and which combinations actually earn a place. Members save up to 40% at the on-site store.

Supplement stacking means combining a few products, taken at the right times, so their effects add up instead of overlap. Get the foundation right, creatine plus adequate protein plus a clean pre-workout, and everything else is a rounding error.
I am Matt Walley. I co-founded Inception Gym Christchurch with my wife Elise in 2022, and my PhD is the reason I read the ingredient panel before I read the marketing. What follows is how I actually think about stacking, both on our training floor at Tower Junction and in the science.
Key takeaways
- The foundation stack is creatine, protein, and a properly dosed pre-workout. Almost everyone stops here and gets 90% of the result.
- Stack for complementary mechanisms and clinical doses, not for the length of the ingredient list.
- Food comes first. Supplements fill the gaps that whole food cannot practically close.
- Every Inception Labs product is available at member pricing at our on-site Supplement Solutions store, up to 40% off retail.
What is supplement stacking?
Supplement stacking is taking two or more supplements together, or in a timed sequence, to produce a combined effect greater than any single product alone. The idea is well supported in sports nutrition research, particularly for foundational combinations like creatine and protein.
The principles I hold products to are simple:
- Complementary mechanisms. Each product should work through a different pathway, so the effects add rather than double up.
- Clinical dosing. Every ingredient should be present at the dose shown to work in research, not a token sprinkle added for the label.
- Timing that matters. A few supplements genuinely need to be taken at a specific point around training. Most do not.
If you cannot name the mechanism a product works through, you are not stacking. You are collecting.
Here is my honest first-hand opinion after four years watching what members actually take. Most of the supplement industry sells complexity because complexity is easier to charge for than a scoop of creatine that costs a few cents a day. Proprietary blends exist to hide underdosing. When we formulated the Inception Labs range, the brief I gave was the opposite: transparent labels, Creapure-sourced creatine, and nothing in the tub that is not pulling its weight.
The foundation stack
Before anyone builds something clever, three products form the evidence-based base for almost every goal.
Creatine monohydrate
Creatine is the most researched performance supplement in existence, full stop. It raises phosphocreatine stores in muscle, which improves power output, strength, and recovery between sets. It is also one of the safest supplements we have, and the research on cognitive and healthy-ageing benefits is why I now recommend it to members in their fifties and sixties, women included, not just the twenty-somethings chasing a bench PB.
Sourcing matters more than people think. Inception Labs Creatine Monohydrate uses Creapure, German-sourced and manufactured to pharmaceutical standards, HPLC verified and banned-substance tested. If you want the full breakdown, I wrote a dedicated creatine benefits guide.
Stack timing: 3 to 5g daily, any time, every day. Consistency beats timing here by a mile.
Protein
Protein is not a post-workout drink. It is a daily requirement most people quietly miss. To maximise muscle protein synthesis you want roughly 1.6 to 2.0g of protein per kilogram of bodyweight per day, spread across your meals. I always tell members to hit that with food first and let a shake close the gap, not the other way round. There is more detail in my protein intake guide.
Inception Labs Collagen Whey Protein pairs whey isolate with bovine collagen. The whey drives recovery through its leucine content; the collagen supports joint and connective tissue. Under the training volume I see on our floor, that second job earns its place.
Stack timing: between meals or after training, to hit your daily target.
Pre-workout
A good pre-workout addresses the real demands of a hard session: energy, focus, endurance, blood flow. Inception Labs Valor Pre-Workout runs 350mg of caffeine alongside Alpha GPC.
The nootropic is the difference. Caffeine alone gives you energy but can hand you anxiety and a mid-session crash with it. Alpha GPC supports acetylcholine, which sharpens focus and neuromuscular coordination, so the energy arrives with control rather than jitter.
Stack timing: 20 to 30 minutes before you train.
How the foundation works in practice
Three products, three windows:
- Pre-training: Valor Pre-Workout for energy, focus, and endurance.
- Daily and post-training: Collagen Whey Protein for recovery, protein synthesis, and joints.
- Daily, any time: Creatine Monohydrate for strength, power, and lean mass.
That is it. If you did nothing beyond this for a year, trained consistently, and ate like an adult, you would get the vast majority of what supplements have to offer.
Intermediate stacks: targeted products
Once the foundation is locked in and you have trained consistently for six months or more, a few targeted products can address specific goals.
Fat loss focus: 1510 Fat Incinerator
Inception Labs 1510 Fat Incinerator extends the metabolic effect of training through thermogenesis and gives you nootropic focus without the jitter of a high-stimulant burner. It works through mechanisms that complement Valor rather than duplicate it. If caffeine sensitivity is a factor, drop or reduce the pre-workout on days you take 1510, and watch your total daily caffeine.
Stack timing: morning or pre-training. Keep it well clear of sleep.
Muscle building focus: Ichor
For members whose goal is lean gain, Ichor is a two-ingredient, clinically dosed formula. It stacks cleanly with creatine and protein because the mechanisms do not interfere with each other.
Stack timing: as directed on the label, used consistently.
Men's health: Transcend
Transcend is a natural testosterone-support formula aimed at strength, recovery, mood, and lean muscle. For men past 30, where natural testosterone starts to drift down, it can be a sensible addition on top of creatine and protein. Add Valor and you have a complete performance protocol.
The complete Inception Labs stack
Not everyone needs everything. Here is how the full range maps to purpose and position:
- Daily strength and power: Creatine Monohydrate, the daily foundation.
- Recovery and joint health: Collagen Whey Protein, post-training or daily.
- Training performance: Valor Pre-Workout, pre-training.
- Body composition: 1510 Fat Incinerator or Ichor, depending on the goal.
- Hormonal support (men): Transcend, daily.
The real advantage is not owning the whole list. It is having every one of these within arm's reach at member pricing on the way in or out of a session. Want to see what membership costs against those savings? Have a look at the membership options, or come try the floor free first.
Member pricing
Every Inception Labs product sells at our on-site Supplement Solutions store at member pricing, up to 40% off retail.
Here is a piece of blunt owner honesty I do not mind putting in writing. A member buying a creatine and a protein each month saves enough against retail to offset a chunk of their membership. Two or three products and the supplement discount covers a real portion of what you pay us for the gym. I designed it that way on purpose, because I would rather earn loyalty on value than lock people in with fees, which is the same reason our Fitness Passport members pay no tag fees and no sign-up fees.
Timing your stack: a sample day
A typical training day on the foundation stack:
Morning (non-training day):
- Creatine with breakfast, 3 to 5g, any time.
- A protein shake if your food protein is running low.
Training day:
- Creatine with your first meal.
- Valor Pre-Workout 20 to 30 minutes before you train.
- Collagen Whey Protein in the hours after your session.
Evening:
- Make sure your daily protein target is met across food and supplements combined.
Consistency matters far more than perfect timing. Do not let a missed window talk you out of the whole day.
Common stacking mistakes
Stacking stimulants carelessly. A 350mg pre-workout plus a caffeinated fat burner is a lot of stimulant. It buys you anxiety, wrecked sleep, and cardiovascular stress. Read the labels and track your total.
Skipping the foundation for the fancy stuff. I watch members reach for SERM-style products and test boosters before creatine, protein, and their nutrition are even in place. The foundation delivers the biggest returns by a distance. Build it first.
Treating supplements as a substitute for the work. A good pre-workout makes a hard session better. It will not rescue a half-effort one. Nothing in a tub outworks showing up.
Ignoring whole food. Supplements supplement. For a personalised plan built around your body composition data and training, our own Inception Nutrition team does PhD-led coaching, and members get a free body composition scan to base it on.
Getting started
The Supplement Solutions store at Tower Junction carries the full Inception Labs range. During staffed hours my team can talk you through which protocol fits your goal, no upsell theatre.
We are a 5.0-rated gym across 1,000+ Google reviews, and I would back the honesty of our supplement advice against that same standard. If you are not a member yet, the best first move is not to buy anything. It is to claim a free trial, train on the floor, and see whether this is the room you want to be in. If it is, explore the membership options and start with the foundation. That is exactly what I would tell you standing at the front desk.
