Body composition tracking measures the different parts of your body separately: fat mass, muscle mass, and visceral fat, instead of collapsing them into one weight number. That distinction is the whole game, because the bathroom scale cannot tell you whether the kilo you lost this month was fat or muscle, and those are opposite outcomes.
I have watched this play out on our floor at Inception more times than I can count. A member drops two kilos, feels flat about it, then scans and finds they lost three kilos of fat and added a kilo of muscle. The scale told them a boring story. The scan told them the truth.

Why does the scale lie to you?
Weight is the sum of everything you are made of: muscle, fat, bone, water, organs, the lot. Change any one of them and the number moves.
That is a measurement problem. In a single week your weight can swing two kilos or more from hydration alone. Glycogen storage shifts with your carbohydrate intake and training, and each unit of glycogen drags water along with it. A salty meal holds water. A hard leg session empties muscle glycogen and fluid, so you weigh less the next morning for reasons that have nothing to do with fat.
The signal in a daily scale reading is so buried in this noise that it can genuinely hide real progress. People who weigh in every morning and see random jumps often cannot separate a month of genuine fat loss from the water underneath it.
More to the point, weight tells you nothing about what changed. Almost nobody who trains here actually wants to "lose weight." They want to lose fat and keep or build muscle. Those are two different objectives, and the scale treats them as one.
The scale is a single blurry data point. A body composition scan is the full picture, and the full picture is what separates training that produces results from training that only produces effort.
What does a body composition scan actually measure?
The scans we run at Inception use bioelectrical impedance analysis. A weak, imperceptible electrical signal passes through the body. Different tissues conduct it differently: muscle holds a lot of water and conducts well, fat conducts poorly, so the device can pull them apart.
Here is what you get back, and what each number is for.
- Fat mass. The absolute weight of body fat. More useful than percentage alone because it accounts for your total size.
- Fat-free mass (lean mass). Everything that is not fat: muscle, bone, organs, water. Shifts here mostly reflect muscle.
- Skeletal muscle mass. An estimate of skeletal muscle specifically, split out from other lean tissue.
- Body fat percentage. The share of your weight that is fat. A clean way to compare yourself over time and against reference ranges.
- Visceral fat. Fat packed around your abdominal organs, separate from the fat under your skin. It is more metabolically active and more tightly linked to metabolic disease risk. This is the number I care about most for our older and health-focused members.
- Body water. Total body water, useful for reading hydration and acute fluid changes.
This is also why scans are quietly replacing crude proxies like BMI. BMI cannot tell a lean 95kg powerlifter apart from someone the same height and weight carrying far more fat and far less muscle. How does scan data change your training?
Once you have a few scans spaced out over time, a lot of decisions that used to be guesswork become obvious.
Separating fat loss from muscle loss
This is the one that matters most. In a calorie deficit your body can burn both fat and muscle for fuel. The goal is to lose fat and defend muscle. The scale cannot tell you which one is leaving. The scan can.
If your weight is dropping and lean mass is holding or climbing, that is the ideal result: keep going. If weight is dropping but lean mass is falling with it, the scan is telling you to act now: push protein up, add a muscle-preserving training stimulus, or ease off the size of the deficit. Without the data, months of quiet muscle loss can pass before you notice in the mirror.
This is especially urgent for the members I now see coming in on GLP-1 medications for weight loss. The weight comes off fast, but a chunk of it can be muscle if nobody is watching. Scanning plus lifting is how you protect lean mass through that process, which is exactly why I wrote about strength training on GLP-1 medications.
Tracking muscle gain in a surplus
In a building phase, eating above maintenance, some fat gain comes with the territory. The real question is whether the ratio of muscle to fat is acceptable, or whether your surplus is mostly landing as fat. Scan every four to six weeks and you will know. Meaningful muscle alongside modest fat means the plan works. Fat piling on with barely any lean gain means something in the training or the food has to change.
Motivation through the noise
Scan data gives you objective proof of progress the scale and the mirror simply cannot. If you are recomposing, losing fat and gaining muscle at once, which is common in newer trainees, your weight can sit dead still for weeks while your body genuinely transforms underneath. The scan shows it happening. That is far stronger fuel than staring at a number that moves at random.
Health, not just aesthetics
For members training for the long haul, this data is clinically meaningful. Visceral fat, lean mass relative to bodyweight, and the trend in fat mass are real health markers. Holding onto muscle as you age is one of the strongest predictors of staying functional and independent later in life, which is a core reason I built the free scan into every membership rather than charging for it like a clinic would.
How often should you scan?
BIA scans are sensitive to hydration, food, recent training, and time of day. To make your readings comparable, standardise the conditions:
- Same time of day (morning, before food and water, is the standard).
- Same hydration state.
- At least 12 hours after your last real meal.
- At least 24 hours after intense training.
- No diuretics, including large amounts of caffeine, in the hours beforehand.
You will not nail all of these every time. Do not stress about it. The more consistent your conditions, the cleaner your trend line.
On frequency, every four to eight weeks is the sweet spot for most people. It gives enough time for real adaptation without drowning you in short-term wobble. Weekly scanning just produces confusing static.
- Initial scan: at or just before starting a new programme or phase.
- Four to six weeks: first real progress check.
- Three months: quarterly review against longer-term goals.
- Six and twelve months: the big-picture review points.
In a serious cut or a hard building block, monthly scans are reasonable. In maintenance, every six to eight weeks is plenty.
Reading your results without frustration
Realistic expectations stop you overreacting to a single reading.
- Fat loss. Around 0.5 to 1% of bodyweight per week is sustainable for most people in a deficit. Faster usually means more muscle lost and more metabolic pushback.
- Muscle gain. For a true beginner in year one, up to roughly 1kg per month for men and about 0.5kg for women is achievable. After two-plus years of consistent training it slows sharply, closer to 0.5kg per month for men and 0.25kg for women. These are rough ceilings, not averages.
- Recomposition. Simultaneous fat loss and muscle gain, most pronounced in beginners and people coming back after a layoff. Slower than a focused cut or bulk, and it needs solid protein and consistent training. Scans matter here because your weight may barely move while your composition improves a lot.
- Short-term noise is normal. Even with clean conditions, a one to two percent swing in body fat readings between scans is common. Read the three to four month trend, not one dot on the chart.
A note I keep repeating to members over 40, and especially to the women who train here: do not fear the scale creeping up when your scan shows lean mass rising. Muscle is the tissue you want to be defending as you age. The research on this keeps getting stronger, with older female lifters showing meaningfully lower all-cause mortality, and grip and muscle strength tracking with living longer. Turning the numbers into a plan
The value is not in any single reading. It is in what the trend tells you to do next.
- If muscle mass is declining: lift protein, confirm your training volume is high enough to preserve muscle, and check the deficit is not too aggressive.
- If fat is not moving despite a "deficit": review your actual intake, because almost everyone underestimates it, then add training volume or intensity. The scan confirms or kills the theory.
- If muscle and fat are both rising at acceptable rates: you are running an effective building phase. Hold the course and rescan in six to eight weeks.
- If nothing is changing at all: usually the training, the nutrition, or both are not yet at the level required. In my experience it is more often nutrition than training.

The long view
One scan is useful. A run of scans over years is genuinely powerful. Being able to look back across two or three years, see the arc, understand which training phases actually moved your composition, and use that to sharpen future decisions is one of the most valuable things any member can carry with them.
