If your employer offers Fitness Passport, Inception Gym at Tower Junction is the only gym in the Christchurch Fitness Passport network that charges no sign-up fee and no key tag fee. I'm Dr Matt Walley, and my wife Elise and I built and still run this gym, so I can tell you exactly what you get for your Fitness Passport rate and where other venues quietly claw value back.

Fitness Passport is a genuinely good benefit, but not every venue treats it the same way. The difference between two gyms on the same programme can be hundreds of dollars before you ever load a bar.

Key takeaways

  • Fitness Passport is a subsidised workplace gym benefit across a network of over 200 facilities in New Zealand and Australia.
  • Eligibility is set by your employer, not by us, and is verified when you sign up.
  • Many Christchurch gyms add a sign-up fee (often $50+) and a key tag fee ($20 to $30) on top of your subsidised rate.
  • At Inception you pay neither, get full 24/7 access, free body composition scans, and supplement member pricing.

What is Fitness Passport?

Fitness Passport is a workplace health programme that gives eligible employees subsidised access to a network of gyms, pools, and leisure centres across New Zealand and Australia, more than 200 facilities in total. Your employer partners with the programme, and you join through them at a rate well below standard gym pricing.

It's popular with the people who need flexible training the most: public health workers, central and local government staff, emergency services, and larger corporate employers running wellness partnerships. If your workplace is a partner, you can train at participating gyms for a fraction of the usual cost.

Who's eligible for Fitness Passport in Christchurch?

Eligibility is determined by your employer. If your organisation holds a current agreement with Fitness Passport, you and, in most cases, your immediate family (a partner and dependent children) can sign up. Groups that commonly qualify in New Zealand include:

  • Public health employees (Canterbury health services and successor organisations)
  • Central and local government employees
  • Emergency services: Police, Fire and Emergency, Ambulance
  • Large corporate employers with wellness partnerships
  • Some educational institutions

To confirm, check the Fitness Passport website or ask your HR team. Eligibility is verified at sign-up, and you'll need to show proof of employment.

What does Fitness Passport cost?

Fitness Passport pricing depends on your employer's arrangement and whether you're adding family. Individual and family options exist, and the exact figures are negotiated between Fitness Passport and your employer, so confirm your rate through HR or the Fitness Passport portal.

The number that actually decides your value, though, is the one nobody advertises: the fees the gym itself adds after you sign up.

The fee problem at most gyms

Here's the part most Fitness Passport guides gloss over, and I'll be blunt because I've watched it happen to people who then walked into my gym frustrated: many gyms charge extra fees on top of your subsidised rate.

Sign-up fees are common. Some Christchurch facilities charge $50 or more just to activate your membership, framed as an administration or joining fee. Fitness Passport holders arrive expecting a subsidised deal and hit an upfront cost before their first session.

Key tag fees are the other one. Plenty of gyms still run on a physical fob or tag, and replacements typically run $20 to $30. Because Fitness Passport members often use several facilities, that's the whole point of the programme, you can end up carrying and replacing access devices across venues.

None of this is illegal or unusual. It's just cost that quietly shrinks the benefit your employer negotiated for you.

My view after running this floor since 2022: a "subsidised" membership that adds a joining fee and a tag fee isn't really subsidised, it's a discount with the discount handed back at the door.

Why Inception Gym is different

We accept Fitness Passport members with no sign-up fee and no key tag fee. That isn't a limited-time promotion. It's the standard arrangement, and it's the reason I'm comfortable calling us the best-value Fitness Passport gym in Christchurch.

No sign-up fee. You won't be charged an administration, joining, or activation fee to start your Fitness Passport membership with us. Zero dollars.

No key tag fee. Our access runs through a smartphone app powered by GymMaster. Your phone is your key. There's no physical tag to lose, replace, or pay for.

That specific combination, no joining fee and no tag fee, is unique in the Christchurch Fitness Passport network. I set it up that way deliberately, and I've kept it that way because it's the right thing to do for members who've already earned the benefit through their work.

You can read the full breakdown, including the fee comparison against other Christchurch gyms, on our Fitness Passport page.

What do Fitness Passport members get at Inception Gym?

Full access. This matters, so I'll say it plainly: there is no restricted Fitness Passport tier here. You get exactly what a standard member gets.

Equipment access

We house 71 machine variants across 92 individual pieces, 43 of them plate-loaded, alongside a full free weight area with dumbbells up to 70kg, all inside an 800 sqm purpose-built floor. We run two squat racks, and I'd rather be honest about that number than inflate it. Whether you're chasing strength, hypertrophy, body composition, or general fitness, the depth here goes beyond most commercial gyms in Christchurch.

Equipment categories include:

  • A full plate-loaded suite, 43 machines, which is where I spend most of my own training
  • Pin-loaded machines for every major muscle group
  • Free weights: barbells, dumbbells to 70kg, and cable stations
  • Cardio equipment
  • Dedicated stretching and warm-up space

If equipment depth is what pulls you in, our full equipment inventory lists every piece. I'm a fan of well-engineered plate-loaded kit because it lets you load heavy while still moving fluidly, and our plate-loaded machines guide explains why I built the floor around it.

24/7 access

We're open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, and your phone gets you in at any hour. That's not a gimmick, it's the single feature Fitness Passport shift workers tell me they use most: the nurses, paramedics, and officers who can't train on a nine-to-five gym's schedule.

Free body composition scans

Every member here, Fitness Passport included, gets free body composition scans. The scan gives you real numbers on muscle mass and body fat rather than the blunt instrument of scale weight or BMI. My honest opinion after thousands of these: a baseline plus a re-scan every few weeks changes behaviour more than any motivational poster ever will, because progress you can measure is progress you'll keep chasing. Our body composition scans guide walks through how to read yours.

Supplement store access and member pricing

Our on-site Supplement Solutions store carries a full range, including our in-house Inception Labs brand, and Fitness Passport members get member pricing, up to 40% off year-round on top of your reduced gym rate.

Inception Labs products are clinically formulated and clinically dosed. Our creatine monohydrate uses Creapure sourcing from Germany with HPLC verification, and member pricing is $50 against a $70 RRP. If you already buy creatine or protein elsewhere, that saving alone offsets a real chunk of your access cost.

Free initial PT or nutrition consultation

New members, Fitness Passport holders included, get a free initial consultation with a personal trainer or nutrition coach. If you're starting fresh or coming back after a break, that's a structured first step instead of turning up and guessing.

Where is Inception Gym?

We're at Tower Junction, 65 Blenheim Road, Addington, one of Christchurch's largest retail precincts with 3,000+ free car parks on site. Parking is never the reason you skip a session, which matters more than people expect when you're fitting training into a work day.

The location is easy to reach from across the city, with straightforward routes from the CBD, Riccarton, Addington, Spreydon, and the surrounding suburbs. If you commute through or work near the centre, we're a logical stop.

Fitness Passport and family memberships

If your Fitness Passport arrangement covers family, the same no-fee policy applies. Adding a partner or a dependent carries no extra sign-up or key tag cost, and the floor genuinely suits a wide range of ages and fitness levels, from a nervous first-timer to an experienced lifter.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to give notice to cancel my Fitness Passport membership at Inception?

Your terms are governed by the Fitness Passport agreement your employer holds. We don't impose additional cancellation terms or fees beyond that standard arrangement.

Can I use Inception if I have Fitness Passport but my employer isn't listed?

Fitness Passport access is limited to eligible employers with a current agreement. If your employer isn't listed, you can't use the programme at any venue. In that case our standard memberships start from $18.90 per week on a 24-month plan, with an open-term option at $33.90 per week. View full membership pricing.

Is the gym suitable for complete beginners?

Yes. The culture here is professional and welcoming, and because Elise and I own and run the place, the member experience reflects how we'd want to be treated ourselves. If you want structure, the free initial PT consultation gives you a proper starting point. For a feel of the first visit, see our first day at Inception guide.

What if I want more than gym access?

If you want structured nutrition alongside training, you can connect with Inception Nutrition, our PhD-led coaching service. Combining evidence-based nutrition with your training pulls both levers on your results instead of one.
