Your first day at Inception Gym Christchurch is simple: park free at Tower Junction, check in at reception during staffed hours, take a tour of the 800 sqm floor, get a free body composition scan, and, if you have joined on a contract plan, sit down for a free consultation with a trainer or nutrition coach. Then you train.
I am Matt Walley, and I co-founded this gym with my wife Elise in 2022. I am on the floor most weeks, so I have watched a lot of first days. This is exactly what yours will look like, step by step, from leaving the house to driving home after your first session.
Key takeaways
- Park free at Tower Junction: 3,000+ car parks, no meters, no time limits.
- Come during staffed hours for your first visit so you get the full orientation.
- Every member gets free body composition scans, not a sales gimmick.
- Contract members get a free consultation, so you leave with a real programme.
- Your first session is about learning movements, not chasing heavy weights.
What should I bring on my first day?
Keep it simple. In four years of running this place, I have never seen anyone need more than this on day one:
- Comfortable training clothes. Anything you can move freely in. The only dress code is closed-toe shoes on the training floor.
- A water bottle. We have water on site, but bringing your own saves you a walk mid-session.
- Your phone. You will need it for the GymMaster app, which is both your door key and your membership tool.
- A towel (optional). Handy for wiping down equipment, though we keep cleaning stations throughout the floor.
You do not need gloves, a lifting belt, or any specialised gear. If you decide later that you want them, the supplement store sells the basics. On day one, just bring yourself.
Download the GymMaster app first
If you are joining as a member, the GymMaster app is your gateway. It handles 24/7 access (the app opens the door), membership management, and session tracking. Download it before you arrive and your check-in is faster.
If you are coming in on a free 24-hour trial, do not worry about the app. My team sets you up when you arrive.
Getting to Inception Gym
Parking is the part most people worry about, and shouldn't
We are at Tower Junction, 65 Blenheim Road, Addington, Christchurch. Tower Junction is a major retail hub with 3,000+ free car parks. I chose this site partly for that reason: I was tired of gyms where the first friction of your workout is circling for a park. Here there are no meters, no time limits. Drive in, park near the entrance, walk in.
From the CBD the drive is roughly 10 minutes. From Riccarton, about 5. From most central Christchurch suburbs, 10 to 15 minutes at most. More on the location is on our Tower Junction page.
Finding the entrance
Inception Gym is clearly signed within Tower Junction. Once you have parked, the entrance is easy to spot, and reception is right inside the door.
When should I arrive for my first visit?
For your first visit, come during staffed hours. Those are Monday to Thursday 7am to 7pm, and Friday to Sunday 9am to 4pm. Members have 24-hour access every day of the year through the app, but on day one you want a person to walk you through everything.
Tell reception you are new. Whether you are a member, a trial visitor, or just looking, they will take it from there. There is no hard sell here, and I mean that as a matter of policy, not a slogan. We show you the facility, answer your questions, and let the gym make its own case.
The hardest rep of your entire membership is the one where you walk through the door the first time. My whole job on day one is to make that rep easy.
If you are already set up as a member and arrive outside staffed hours, the app controls door entry and the gym runs full security and surveillance around the clock. Still, for a genuine first visit, come when we are staffed.
The facility tour
A staff member walks you through the entire 800 sqm training floor. Here is what you will see.
The training floor
92 pieces of equipment across 71 machine variants, laid out in a purpose-built space. We organise it logically: plate-loaded machines (43 of them), pin-loaded machines, free weights, dumbbells up to 70kg, cable stations, two squat racks, and cardio. Each zone is clearly defined and easy to navigate once you have seen it once.
Here is a genuine opinion I hold, having specced this floor myself: most Christchurch gyms buy one of everything to fill a room. We bought depth. The reason we run 43 plate-loaded machines is that plate-loaded lets you load heavy and still move fluidly, so a beginner and a strong lifter can use the same piece without compromise. That depth is the single thing our members mention most in our 5.0 across 1,000+ Google reviews, and it is deliberate. For the full breakdown by category, see the equipment page.
The supplement store
We have an on-site Supplement Solutions store right inside the facility, carrying a full range including our in-house Inception Labs line, which I built around clinical dosing rather than marketing doses. As a member you save up to 40% on supplements year-round, with an additional $20 member saving per Inception Labs product.
You do not need to buy anything on day one. It is there when you are ready, and staff can advise based on your actual goals.
Changing areas and amenities
Clean, well-maintained changing rooms with showers. If you train before or after work, you can change on site without a second thought. Cleanliness is something I am genuinely uncompromising about; I hold the changing areas to the same standard as the training floor, because I have walked into enough grim gym showers in my life to know how much it matters.
Your free body composition scan
Every member gets free body composition scans. This is not a gimmick to book you into a sales pitch. It is a genuine baseline, and it is the tool I would want if I were starting over.
The scan measures:
- Body fat percentage across different regions
- Muscle mass distribution
- Visceral fat levels, the fat around your organs and a key health marker
- Hydration and other metrics
It takes a few minutes and is non-invasive. Here is why I care so much about it: the fitness world is finally moving past the bathroom scale and BMI, both of which tell you almost nothing useful. A body composition scan tells you whether you are gaining muscle or losing it, which is the number that actually matters. Come back in 8 to 12 weeks and compare, and you have objective evidence instead of a guess. Book yours through the free body scan page, and read the body composition scans guide for what the numbers mean.
Your free consultation
If you join on a contract membership, you get a free initial consultation with a personal trainer or nutrition coach. In my view it is one of the most valuable things you do in your first week.
What the consultation covers
It is tailored to you. A trainer will discuss:
- Your training goals: strength, fat loss, general fitness, longevity, or sport-specific
- Your current experience, from complete beginner to advanced
- Any injuries, limitations, or health considerations
- A recommended training programme to get you started
- How to use the key equipment for that programme
- Training frequency and session structure
This is not a 10-minute chat. It is a proper sit-down designed to send you off with a clear, actionable plan. You leave with a programme, not just good intentions. If you want to keep working with a coach beyond the consultation, our personal training team can pick it up from there.
Nutrition support
For members who want structured nutrition guidance, Inception Nutrition runs PhD-led coaching that integrates with your body scan data and training programme. The approach goes well beyond generic meal plans: food-first, evidence-based, built around your body composition and lifestyle. Training tells your body to keep muscle; nutrition decides whether it can. Pair the two and your early results move faster.
Your first training session
Orientation done, programme in hand, it is time to train.
Start light
Your first session is about learning the movements, getting comfortable with the equipment, and setting a baseline. It is not about going heavy or training to failure. Use loads that feel manageable and focus on the movement pattern. There is plenty of time to add intensity once you have built competence and confidence.
Use the machines first
If you are a complete beginner, pin-loaded machines are your best starting point. They guide your body through a fixed path, so the machine handles most of the form for you. Lower injury risk, and you can focus on feeling each muscle group work. As your confidence and body awareness grow, bring in free weights, cables, and more complex movements. If you are weighing the two, our guide on free weights vs machines lays it out.
Nobody is watching
Worth repeating, because it is the fear I hear most from newcomers: nobody on the floor is paying attention to what you are doing. Everyone is focused on their own session. The culture here is professional and respectful, and that is not an accident either. I wrote more about the gym culture that makes first-timers feel at home if the walking-in nerves are the thing holding you back.
Ask for help
If you are unsure about a machine, a movement, or anything else, ask. During staffed hours there is always someone available, and no question is too basic. "How do I adjust this seat" and "am I doing this right" are two of the most common questions we get, and they are exactly the right ones to ask.
After your first session
How you'll feel
Expect some muscle soreness 24 to 48 hours later, especially if you have not trained before. That is delayed onset muscle soreness, and it is normal: your muscles adapting to a new stimulus, not a sign of injury. It fades as your body adjusts over the first two to three weeks.
Stay hydrated, eat well, sleep. Those three do more for your recovery than any supplement or recovery gadget on the market.
Planning your week
For beginners, three sessions a week is the sweet spot. Train on non-consecutive days, for example Monday, Wednesday, Friday, to allow recovery between sessions. Your consultation programme will guide the structure. Follow it consistently for at least four weeks before you change anything.
Book your next scan
Schedule a follow-up body composition scan for 8 to 12 weeks after your first. Comparing the two is objective evidence of progress, and honestly it is one of the most motivating moments I get to witness in a new member's first months: watching the numbers move because of work they put in.
