24/7 gyms in Christchurch: what to expect

What 24/7 gym access actually looks like in Christchurch: security, app entry, peak hours, and what a 24-hour gym gives you when no staff are on the floor. From the owner of Inception Gym.

A 24/7 gym in Christchurch gives you member access 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year through a secure app-based door, with CCTV and logged entry running whether staff are present or not. At my gym, Inception Gym at Tower Junction in Addington, that means the full 800 sqm floor and every one of our 92-plus machines is yours at 3am on a Sunday exactly as it is at midday on a Tuesday.

I am Dr Matt Walley. My wife Elise and I founded Inception Gym in 2022, and I am on the floor most days. Here is what 24/7 access actually looks like in practice, from someone who runs it.

Key takeaways

  • 24/7 access means genuine round-the-clock entry, not "long hours". Check the fine print elsewhere; some Christchurch gyms lock you out overnight.
  • App-based entry plus CCTV plus logged check-ins makes after-hours training safe: no anonymous walk-ins, ever.
  • At Inception, nothing is roped off after hours. Full floor, all equipment, both squat racks, dumbbells to 70kg.
  • Our staffed hours are Monday to Thursday 7am to 7pm and Friday to Sunday 9am to 4pm. Members get in the other hours too.
  • 24/7 is now table stakes in Christchurch. What separates gyms is what you can actually reach at 10pm.

Why does 24/7 gym access matter?

The people who get the most out of a gym membership are often the ones least able to train between nine and five. Shift workers finishing at 11pm. Nurses on a rotating roster. Students with a timetable that changes every term. Parents who only get a clear hour once the kids are down.

I built Inception around a simple observation: consistency is the whole game, and the single biggest thing that breaks consistency is a gym that is closed when your life has a gap in it. Remove the time barrier and people actually show up. That is the entire point of 24/7.

A 24-hour door only matters if the whole gym is open behind it. Access to a locked room full of equipment you cannot reach at 10pm is not 24/7 access, it is marketing.

How does 24/7 access work at Inception Gym?

Every member gets entry through our access app. The app is your key. You open it, tap in at the door, and you are on the floor, any hour, any day of the year including public holidays.

There is no after-hours surcharge and no premium tier for overnight access. It is included in every membership, from the $18.90 per week 24-month plan to the $33.90 per week open-term option. I have never understood charging people extra to use the gym at the times they most need it, so we do not.

Our staffed hours are Monday to Thursday 7am to 7pm, and Friday to Sunday 9am to 4pm. During those windows there is a human on the desk if you want a hand. Outside them, the facility is fully open to members, with security and surveillance running around the clock.

Is it safe to train at a gym at night?

Fair question, and the honest answer is that after-hours training at a well-run gym is safer than most people assume. Here is why, specific to how we run it:

  • App entry means no anonymous walk-ins. Only registered, verified members can open the door. Nobody drifts in off the street at 2am.
  • CCTV covers the floor. The cameras run 24/7, not just during staffed hours.
  • Every entry and exit is logged. There is always a record of exactly who is in the building.
  • The layout has clear sightlines. When I designed the 800 sqm floor I kept it open on purpose, no warren of blind corners.

My one piece of first-hand advice for solo late-night lifting: message a training partner your rough finish time, or use the app on your phone between sets. Not because our floor is risky, it is not, but because that habit is worth building anywhere you train alone. Common sense outperforms worry.

What is available after hours?

Everything. This is where a lot of "24/7" claims quietly fall apart, so I want to be exact about ours.

Some gyms restrict access to parts of the facility outside staffed hours, or shut down the heavier equipment. We do not rope anything off. After hours you get:

  • The full 800 sqm training floor.
  • All 92-plus machines across 71 variants, 43 of them plate-loaded.
  • The complete dumbbell rack, up to 70kg.
  • Both squat racks.
  • The cardio floor.
  • Free member parking, with 3,000-plus free car parks across Tower Junction, so you are never circling for a space at 6am.

If you want to see the full inventory before you commit, the equipment list is public and detailed. I would rather you check than take my word for it.

When are the quiet hours at a Christchurch gym?

If you value a quieter session, after-hours access is a genuine advantage, and it is one of my favourite things about a 24/7 model.

From what I see on the floor and in our check-in data, the busiest window is 5pm to 7pm on weekdays. If you want space, room to superset, and no queue for a rack, the quiet windows are:

  • Early mornings, roughly 5am to 7am.
  • Late evenings, after about 9pm.
  • Weekends outside the late-morning rush.

I train early myself, and the 6am floor at Inception is one of the best-kept secrets in Christchurch: warm, quiet, and you can move through a full session without waiting on anything.

24/7 is table stakes now. What actually separates gyms?

Here is my genuine opinion after four years of running this place: in 2026, 24-hour access in Christchurch is no longer a differentiator. Nearly every serious gym offers it. So do not choose a gym on whether the door opens at midnight, because they nearly all do.

Choose on what is behind the door. Ask three questions:

  1. Is the entire floor open after hours, or just part of it?
  2. What is the equipment depth, really? Count the racks and the plate-loaded machines, not the marketing.
  3. What does it cost with no games? Look for no joining fee, no tag fee, and a fair open-term option.

That is the frame I would use if I were shopping for a gym, and I am confident enough in how we answer those three that I put them in writing. If you are weighing options across the city, I have laid out an honest comparison on our best gym in Christchurch page.

For members on Fitness Passport, the 24/7 access is the same, with no tag fees and no sign-up fees, which is still unique in the Christchurch Fitness Passport network.

Getting started

Inception Gym memberships start at $18.90 per week on a 24-month plan, or $33.90 per week open term if you want to stay flexible and cancel with 28 days' notice. There is no joining fee on any plan, and every plan includes genuine 24/7 access, free body composition scans, and member pricing at the on-site Supplement Solutions store.

The best way to judge a 24 hour gym in Christchurch is to walk in and feel the floor for yourself. Book a free trial and come train at whatever hour suits your life, or book your free body composition scan and see exactly where you are starting from. You can also compare the membership options side by side, or get in touch and I will answer directly.

If you want to line training up with nutrition and recovery, our sister business Inception Nutrition runs PhD-led coaching built to sit alongside your gym programme. For more on making the most of round-the-clock access, read our companion piece on the real benefits of a 24/7 gym.
